Local Food Resources for Scappoose Families
Letter to the Scappoose School District community, October 30, 2025:
Dear Scappoose Families and Community,
We want to ensure every family in our community has access to accurate information and local food resources during the ongoing federal government shutdown. The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) has shared important updates regarding school meal programs and supports available to families.
School Meals Will Continue as Usual
- The ODE confirms that funding remains available for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) through at least November.
- Scappoose School District will continue providing breakfast and lunch to all students at no cost every school day, with no interruption to meal service.
What Families Should Know
- EBT Cards: Existing balances on Oregon Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards will remain active and usable.
- SNAP Benefits: The Oregon Department of Human Services has indicated that November SNAP benefits may be delayed. Families are encouraged to check the ODHS Food Resources page for the latest updates.
Local Food Assistance
For any household in need of additional support, the Columbia Pacific Food Bank’s Scappoose Area Food Pantry offers local assistance. Visit https://cpfoodbank.org/food-pantries/scappoose-area-food-pantry/ to find current hours, locations, and eligibility information.
If you or someone you know needs help beyond food, such as with housing, utilities, or other essential needs, 211info is a free, statewide service that connects Oregonians with community programs and support. You can reach 211info by:
- Dialing 2-1-1
- Texting your ZIP code to 898-211
- Visiting 211info.org
Food for Kids Program
Scappoose School District is also continuing its Food for Kids partnership with the St. Vincent de Paul Scappoose Food Pantry to provide supplemental weekend food support for students.
At the end of each week, students enrolled in the program receive a discreet bag of nonperishable food items to take home. This service is available at all Scappoose schools.
Families interested in participating can email their child’s name and school to Justin Engstrom, District Care Coordinator and McKinney-Vento Liaison, at jengstrom@scappoose.k12.or.us
Scappoose High School students can also connect directly with their counselor or Mr. Engstrom to access the on-site food pantry.
Supporting Our Community
If you are in a position to help, please consider donating to the Scappoose Area Food Pantry or the Oregon Food Bank. These organizations play a critical role in ensuring that families across Oregon continue to have reliable access to food during uncertain times.
In the Scappoose School District, our commitment to students goes beyond the classroom. We’re proud to serve nutritious meals every day and to connect families with community partners who can help ensure no child goes hungry. Together, we can continue to care for one another and support the well-being of every student.
Tim Porter, Ed.D.
Superintendent
